Introduction

Introduction

OpenTeleRehab is an open-source, multidisciplinary telerehabilitation platform that connects healthcare providers, rehabilitation professionals, and service users to improve access to rehabilitation services and advance universal health coverage. It supports the remote identification, referral, and delivery of rehabilitation services, while ensuring continuity throughout the rehabilitation pathway.

OpenTeleRehab consists of three interconnected modules:

  1. Admin Portal: used to manage content, users, and system settings.

  2. Healthcare Portal: used to manage patient accounts, design treatment plans, schedule appointments, and organize communication.

  3. Mobile App: used by patients to access personalized treatment plans and communicate with therapists and healthcare workers. Healthcare workers can also manage patient accounts, design treatment plans, schedule appointments, and organize communication through the mobile application.

In addition, a satellite open-access web application, the OpenTeleRehab Library, allows the public to access, review, and contribute to a global telerehabilitation clinical content library, including exercises, education and information materials, and questionnaires.

Key Features

Admin Portal

The Admin Portal is designed for administrators responsible for managing therapists, healthcare workers, and clinical content used to support the creation of patient treatment plans.

The portal enables administrators to manage all content and configurations related to the other OpenTeleRehab modules. It supports bulk content uploads and is designed to be flexible to accommodate the needs of connected applications.

Access to the Admin Portal is role-based and can be customized for the following user roles:

  • Super Admin

  • Translator

  • Organization Admin

  • Country Admin

  • Regional Admin

  • Rehab Service Admin

  • PHC Service Admin

Healthcare Portal

The Healthcare Portal allows rehabilitation professionals to manage patients and create individualized treatment plans. Users can monitor patient rehabilitation progress, communicate directly with patients via messaging, voice, and video calls, and schedule appointments.

Most features in the portal are shared between therapists and healthcare workers. However, some functionalities are role-specific:

  • Healthcare Workers can conduct patient interviews and initiate referrals to rehabilitation services.

  • Therapists can create exercises, education materials, and questionnaires, as well as copy and adapt existing content from the OpenTeleRehab Global Library.

Mobile App

The OpenTeleRehab Mobile App enables patients to access treatment plans designed by therapists and healthcare workers. It displays daily scheduled activities in an easy-to-read card format, including:

  • Exercises with images and step-by-step instructions

  • Questionnaires and feedback forms

  • Education and information materials

The application also supports chat and call features, allowing patients to communicate directly with their therapists and healthcare workers. Patients can view and manage their appointments through the app.

Healthcare workers can additionally use the mobile application to manage patients, conduct interviews, refer patients to rehabilitation services, create appointments, and communicate via messaging and calls.

OpenTeleRehab Library

The OpenTeleRehab Library is a satellite open-access platform where telerehabilitation clinical contents (Exercises, Education Materials and Questionnaires) are publicly available. Visitors of the Library can access, review and submit new clinical content. Submitted clinical content(s) (Exercises, Education Materials and Questionnaires) are reviewed by a team of moderators. Once approved, the submitted clinical content(s) can be seen on the website.
